Coastal Louisiana is part of the geographical area often referred to as the Gulf Coast, the Gulf South, or the South Coast of the United States. The Gulf Coast includes Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida all of which have coastlines on the Gulf of Mexico. The coast of Louisiana is mostly made up of a complex system of marshes, swamps, barrier islands, and river systems.

In this level of the White Boot Explorer’s Club certification, the information you will learn will give you a deeper understanding of Louisiana’s coastal landscape before moving to more focused topics. This level contains a vocabulary list that will help you explore terms that LUMCON scientists and scientists worldwide use when talking about coastal environments. You’ll also learn about watersheds, estuaries, and coastal wetlands. In order to develop a deeper understanding of the importance of Louisiana’s coastal landscape, we must first explore the “big picture”. We need to understand the important links to watersheds, the uses and values of estuaries, and how wetlands contribute to the health and function of the entire ecosystem.

After you complete all the “lessons” in this level. There will be a short quiz that you need to score at least 75% on before moving on to Level 2. You’ll have an unlimited amount of time to do the lessons. You will be able to retake the quiz as many times as you need to pass.

You must remember to click the green “Mark Complete” button after you finish each lesson. If you don’t your level completion is not recorded. Once you complete Level 1 you’ll receive a certificate to celebrate your success in achieving the first step in becoming a White Boot Explorer!
